Registration for the Krispy Kreme Challenge usually fills up as fast as the namesake donuts do your digestive tract, so you may want to think about getting onboardĀ this weekend when aspiring, well, runners are able to join in on what’s become the Triangle’s favorite charity event.

We write about the event every year but tend to miss the registration announcement in our effort to sell homes. We caught it this year.

For anyone new to the Triangle, this unique, nationally-known race has you run 2.5 miles from NC State to the famed donut shop, scarf down a dozen of theĀ finest form of American breakfast pastries (original glazed), and trace your route back to the finish. The “challenge” is to do it within an hour.

It all started about ten years ago when some student Wolfpackers thought it would make for an interesting evening. (What else should college students do with their time?) The race has grown to well over 5,000 participants every year and its garnered television coverage from all over the country.

Best of all, it’s turned into a terrific charity for children. Proceeds from registrations benefit the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. To date, the event has donated well over $700,000 to the hospital.

See, eating a dozen donuts can be good for somebody.
