Triangle To-Do: NC State Fair Starts This Week, 10/16/14

That annual tradition of southern culture, agricultural history, crazy rides and even crazier foods is back. The North Carolina State Fair starts this Thursday, 10/16 and will run for ten days, ending Sunday 10/26 at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in west Raleigh.

What’s unique about this year’s fair is the musical variety. While traditionally an outlet for up and coming country acts, music fans can take in acts like Vanilla Ice (yes, him), Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, and Gospel favorite Tamela Mann, as well as groups like Parmalee and singer-songwriters Brandy Clark Trace Adkins, and Clay Walker.

Of course, the food will once again be an exploration of caloric wonderment and indulgence, with the goal being to realize just how many things can be added to a deep fryer and remain defined as food. But one can’t argue about the taste, nutritional value aside. No one wants to admit it, but we all want to try deep-fried BBQ.

The kids will have plenty to keep them occupied. New acts this season include acrobats who perform while entangled in suspended silk ribbons, the Tumbleweed Crossing Wild West Show, and a number of kid-friendly entertainment acts, like juggler and stuntman Roberto the Magnificent on the Dorton Arena sidewalk.

When the adults need a few minutes of their own at the fair, they’ll be happy to know that North Carolina’s craft beer industry will have an increased presence, as will the state’s ever-increasing selection of wine producers. Naturally, the state’s rich history in farming, textiles, and ag will be on display across the fairgrounds in a number of ways, from a history of farm machinery to a garden and flower show.

The daily schedule of events at the Fair can be found here.
