Triangle To-Do: Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, this weekend 9/27-28

There’s country music, then there’s Bluegrass. And it’s safe to argue that the latter is bit more entrenched in its southern roots than what passes for country today. (Regardless, North Carolina is home to a number of today’s biggest country stars.)

All week the International Bluegrass Music Association has been “conferencing” in Downtown Raleigh. However, all the elbow-rubbing and hobnobbing will culminate this weekend with the Wide Open Bluegrass Festival.

The event will be hosted in the convention center and Red Hat Amphitheater, where concert stages will host a number of acts like Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Bela Fleck and the Infamous Stringdusters. There’s an outdoor music stage, street fair, music workshops and perhaps the most anticipated event, at least for locals, the North Carolina Whole Hog Barbecue State Championship.

That’s a mouthful, huh?

In short, come tomorrow night and Saturday, Downtown Raleigh is going to be alive with the sound of banjos, steel guitars, fiddles and acoustic guitars. So head downtown this weekend, you’re bound to find something cool to see and especially, to tap your toes to.

All the information you’ll need about the event, including parking, costs and concert schedules can be found here
