Rock Harbor Grill is the newest eatery to open its, well, shell, in Downtown Apex. The new seafood and steak restaurant has joined the community along the rich, historic Salem Street. It’s located at 121 N. Salem St., the previous location of The Hideaway Restaurant and Bar.

Rock Harbor’s chef will concentrate on seafood, but also offer a variety of traditional alternatives prepared with gusto, like a Duck Confit pot pie appetizer and the Rock Harbor skillet starter, a seared blend of oven-dried tomatos, eggplant and fresh mozzarella. The entre menu has enough to get us in on description alone. The Rock Harbor “picatta” and lemon-encrusted trout come to mind, upon first glance.

There’s also the Rock Harbor crepes, rolled with “wild mushroom duxelles & goat cheese … ” and a varied selection of duck, chicken and beef. And of course, like any small town restaurant, there has to be a full bar to welcome those within walking distance.

Although it’s hard to tell with such an array of seafood preparations, Rock Harbor also lists a number of vegetarian alternatives.

It’s always warming to see another small business make its way into a place like Salem Street. The business traffic is there and the sense of community is strong enough to keep it intact and full of local flavor. Of course, like every business, a lot of the little things need to go right. But as neighbors and residents, we can help those things happen.

Downtown Apex is a terrific place to live and visit. On your way in or out, stop at the Rock Harbor Grill. (They also offer lunch.) And don’t forget the 10% off coupon on their website.
