Well, football season is little more than half-way over, we just had a Presidential election and the nights are longer, darker and growing colder.

Yeah, it’s ACC basketball season in the Triangle.

This Friday marks the season’s tip-off with all three Triangle teams looking to make deep tournament runs come March. Sure, NC State is looking to re-claim its position among the league elites, but that doesn’t mean that stalwarts UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke are going to stand idly by in the lane and watch it happen. Without question, this season is going to be a good one.

It’s too bad the NHL is stil quibbling over contracts or we’d be as equally excited about the prospect of southern hockey. But the league just can’t seem to stop putting itself into the boards. And in a place like the Triangle, even with its hockey-loving transplants and large contingent of local converts, where college sports have long ruled the athletic landscape, sports that require skates already take a penalty box seat to the main draw: Tobacco Road Basketball.

This Friday, NC State plays Miami of Ohio at the PNC Arena at 7:00 p.m.; UNC-Chapel Hill plays Gardner-Webb, also at 7:00 at The Smith Center; and Duke plays Georgia State at Cameron Indoor Stadium, also tipping off at 7:00 p.m.

Good times.
