It’s ACC tournament week! Tournament tips off Thursday, 3/8.

2012 ACC Tourney is March 8 -11 in Atlanta, GA

The ACC tournament is a tradition in the Triangle. Whether you are new to the area or fifth generation ACC fan, get ready for another outstanding weekend of the best basketball in America. Carolina and Duke look destined to clash again come Sunday afternoon but with Florida State’s season success looming over both stalwarts, things could be really fun on Saturday.

March basketball in the Triangle is more of a right of passage into spring than a sporting event. It’s when the colder days become few and far between, the restaurant and bar patios get busy again and a sudden, typically undocumented, cold virus rapidly spreads throughout your workplace. Most people heal by the end of the weekend. Coincidentally. You’ll see signs of it starting very soon.

It all starts on Thursday at noon in Atlanta (traditionalist prefer Greensboro, but Atlanta isn’t a terrible alternative) with the following games:

  • Maryland/Wake Forest: 12:00 p.m.
  • NC State/Boston College: 2:00 p.m.
  • Clemson/VA Tech: 7:00 p.m.
  • Miami/GA Tech: 9:00 p.m.

The winners of these first round games move on to play the front-runners on Friday, seeds 1-4 respectively: UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, Florida State and Virginia. Game times are also at 12:00, 2:00, 7:00 and 9:00. Saturday’s semi-final games are at 1:00 and 3:00 and the championship is Sunday at 1:00.

We’re certainly not the types to advocate for “skipping” work but we would be remiss if we didn’t pay tribute in this context to the overwhelming benefit smart phones have become to business. It’s amazing. And with WiFi service available so prevalently around the Triangle …

College sports—and their traditions—are a huge benefit to living in Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill and lead to countless memories for the families that take part. If you have the chance to join some friends for a long lunch either Thursday or Friday this week, go ahead and treat yourself. You would have a hard time finding someone who wouldn’t understand.

Who are your rooting for?
