Not long into the recession a few years back, the average size of new homes in America began to decline and collectively, the country was embracing a “less is more” mentality. For most of the country, that remains the case today.

In the midst of a slow recovery, the most wealthy among us is back on the big trend, and they are not kidding around about it. The Wall Street Journal profiled a few of the homes in question, and they are incredible, to say the least. Whether or not you prefer big houses, you can’t help but be wowed by what architects and builders are able to design and assemble.

Much of what’s found in the most expensive American homes is often paired down and integrated into the more practical home designs many of us seek to live in. It’s not unlike high fashion. Few people walk around wearing what comes down the runway but eventually, what’s showcased in New York and Milan ends up in Raleigh.

Watch the video and scroll through these pictures. Impressive stuff.
