Video: Here comes 2012 …

And there goes 2011.

That was fast. And we shouldn’t expect 2012 to move any slower.

For a lot of real estate agents, the New Year provides a chance to wax theoretical about market predictions and forecasts and what will be. We think it’s just too hard to tell. Plus, like we’ve said many times on this blog, only your own personal life needs should drive your decision to buy and sell a home. All we do know is that the real estate market is cyclical, always changing and dependent on metrics as small as your zip code and as broad as politics in China. It’s best to do what’s right for you, not what’s read on a chart.

And with that clumsy segue, let’s talk about parties! If you’re up for heading out on December 31, Downtown Raleigh has been the place to be for the last several years thanks to the city-wide First Night celebration.

Each year the streets, bars, restaurants and museums fill up with bands and performances and vendors that provide an array of options wide enough to accomodate every member of the family. This year, there will even be a 90-foot ferris wheel pitched on Fayetteville St. as part of the Paris-themed event.

Originally targeted specifically for families, the First Night event has grown to include the adult crowd who may be heading out sans kids. And that’s cool, as long as everyone behaves themselves. However, the “Children’s Celebration” remains quite popular.

In whatever way you choose to spend New Year’s Eve, we ask you to do it safely. Everyone has family and friends out to catch a glimpse of 2012′s first moments, which means everyone has a stake in keeping our town and city streets and homes safe enough to do it all again next year.

Happy New Year.
