Raleigh Winterfest underway in Downtown

We don’t get a lot of chances to ice skate in the south. But a couple of years ago that all changed, thanks to Downtown Raleigh’s annual Winterfest.

Winterfest is a series of live events centered around an ice rink installed along Fayetteville Street in City Plaza. The two-month long event kicked off last weekend.

Each day of the week has a unique theme during Winterfest, but none will be as cool as “Sledding Sundays,” which will happen on 12/18, 1/8 and 1/15. A company called SnowMyYard that specializes in creating artificial snow environments, will build a family-friendly sledding park right in Downtown Raleigh.

Tuesdays during Winterfest are two for one entry nights and Wednesdays include live music performances to accompany skaters. Thursdays are date nights that include a carriage ride with skating admission while Fridays get pumped up a bit with DJ Paradime from Pulse 102.

Winterfest has become a terrific tradition for the City of Oaks and serves to help promote the massive improvements to the city’s urban core over the last several years. Events like this will hopefully increase as more companies, especially Red Hat, find their way to Downtown and boost residential options. The City has no shortage of available living options, although urban condo sales have stalled. Nevertheless, Raleigh has more than enough of the economic fundamentals needed to re-energize that market.

Here’s a live look at the ice rink, updated every five minutes. You can find out all you need to know about Raleigh Winterfest at its website.
