We would categorize this post as a “Triangle To-Do” but its subject is not really in the┬áTriangle. But it sure is accessible enough to be worth your interest. Just hop in your mini-van and chug west on I-40 past Winston-Salem, stopping anywhere in between Hickory and Sylva to get treated to an attraction that draws people from all over the world. (Last year, the BBC hit show “Top Gear,” which is watched all over the world, filmed an episode along the Blue Ridge Parkway.)

The North Carolina mountains offer everything a mountain lover, well, loves. And it gets no better than it is in the fall. Quaint and hip mountain towns. Exposed peaks. Miles of trails. Still lakes. Secluded resorts. And an explosion of fall color. Especially in the next couple of weeks.

The best plan would be to make a weekend of it, staying in Asheville, Blowing Rock or Boone. There are also a number of terrific Bed & Breakfasts that would make ideal weekend escapes. Here’s a list.

Asheville’s official website has updates on the foliage status.
