It’s safe to say “Bull Durham” put Durham on the Hollywood map. It did the same for Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins. However, the well-known baseball movie wasn’t really “about” Durham, similar to the number of movies and shows filmed in Wilmington and Asheville’s Biltmore Estate. (Remember its use in Hannibal?)

But now comes “Main Street,” a movie not only filmed in Durham, but a film very much about Durham. Durham locales, the city skyline, sidewalks, storefronts, backyards and a number of other settings seen in the movie will be very familiar to just about anyone who lives in the Triangle. It also boasts some serious star power with actors like Colin Firth, who just won the Best Actor Oscar for “The King’s Speech,” Oscar Winner Ellen Burstyn, Oscar Nominee Patricia Clarkson and for the younger crowd, Orlando Bloom.

The film’s plot, written by another big name in the biz, Pulitzer and Oscar winner Horton Foote (To Kill a Mockingbird, Tender Mercies) is about a newcomer to the city who has a plan to revitalize its decaying downtown business district. In turn, families and relationships are effected and of course, drama ensues. It actually looks quite good despite seeming a bit formulaic. Foote’s writing has to be granted the benefit of the doubt.

The movie opens September 9. Here’s the iTunes Trailer.
