CAM Raleigh's exterior in the Warehouse District

Downtown Raleigh seems to be adding a new accoutrement every day. This month, it’s the Raleigh Contemporary Art Museum, now open in the Warehouse District.

The celebration commenced this past weekend and today, May 2, marks its first official week of exhibiting some of the nation’s most recognized and up and coming modern artists. Culturally, socially and architecturally, this is a terrific addition to the Downtown Raleigh landscape. A mid-size city at heart, Raleigh has done an outstanding job of incorporating many big city amenities, such as the recently opened amphitheater, the backing of urban residential development and the massive renovation of Fayetteville Street a few years ago, just to name a few.

CAM Raleigh’s main gallery will be showcasing the work of Washington D.C. artist Dan Steinhilber until August 22 of this year. His work, along with that of New York City’s Naoko Ito, are the inaugural installations.

Steinhilber’s exhibit is called Hold On, Loosely. Ito’s work will be available until July 11 and is the first to be displayed in the Independent Weekly gallery as part of an “emerging artists” series. It’s entitled Urban Nature.

Called CAM Raleigh for short, the museum is located 409 W. Martin Street and is open every day of the week except Tuesday. It’s hours are:

Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri: 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Sat, Sun: 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
First and third Friday of the month open until 9 p.m.
