Living in … MacGregor Downs.
Considered a destination neighborhood throughout the entire Triangle, MacGregor Downs has become the reason many people have moved to the region. Wooded, friendly and ideally located at US 1 and Rt. 64 in Cary, MacGregor Downs is what people look for when seeking exclusivity without conceit.
Everyone who lives in and visits MacGregor Downs is greeted by artfully crafted stone entrances, densely wooded drives and bridged waterways. Homes are granted substantial lot sizes, many well over an acre, and were developed by Arthur Steckler and Gregory Poole Sr., two widely recognized area homebuilders and businessmen.
Started in the 1960s, MacGregor Downs remains in a state of constant development thanks to the ever-vigilant efforts of its Homeowners Association to maintain landscaping standards amongst the neighborhood’s many public walks and medians. Individual homeowners take pride in keeping pace and few homes appear as if they are not professionally maintained, although the opposite is often true.
Highlights of the 700-acre MacGregor Downs are easy to spot. It’s namesake lake snakes around the homes and primary roads, offering residents a number of ideal places to contemplate their day or watch the sun fall. Of course, a neighborhood of this quality in a climate like North Carolina’s would be far from complete without a country club.
At MacGregor Downs Country Club, which is non-profit, member-owned and private, golf is often secondary. The club’s event facilities attract thousands of wedding guests every year and remain stacked with family events for residents during all seasons. There is of course a pool and youth swimming, as well as eight clay and three hard tennis courts with a stocked pro shop and year-round instruction.
The course itself is considered one of the region’s finest. It is meticulously maintained and challenging for every level with 18 holes of nationally ranked doglegs, scenic water ways and forested alleys. It was designed by William Bryd and has been played upon by just about every recognizable name in the sport. In short, MacGregor Downs Country Club plays to its reputation.
Homes in the neighborhood range from the mid-$200s to well over $1 million. There are condos and shaded residential properties with varying architectural appeal, as well as sub-divisions such as Balmoral of Cary with executive townhomes and MacGregor West, which offers homes on the high-end of Triangle-area home prices.
It’s easy to head out to all corners of the Triangle from MacGregor Downs but you don’t have to go too far to find everything you need, including great dining and shopping options. Getting out to Research Triangle Park is relatively easy, as is the drive to Raleigh and access to I-40.
But for those who live in Cary’s MacGregor Downs, the commute home is always the easiest. We have a number of friends who have lived there for years and wouldn’t change anything about it. And we never miss a chance to visit them from nearby Picardy Pointe.
If you think the quality of life offered by this outstanding neighborhood is worth considering, give us a call to visit some of the available homes. We’re always looking for an excuse to tour our neighboring community.
