Julia Molee is a kicker for Davis Drive Middle School's football team

Looking for a sports story with less drama than a Brett Farve text message? Well, we have a cool one for you, right out of the hallways of Cary’s Davis Drive Middle School (and via The Cary News), where eighth-grader Julia Molee (pictured from photo by Michael McLoone of The Cary News/News & Observer) has become one of the areas most consistent field goal kickers.

Yes, Julia.

Currently the only girl on the team and boasting a 4-of-5 record on extra points, Julia’s talent, like many football kickers, originated on the soccer field. Her father is an assistant on the football team and translated her missing of a close-range attempt in the penalty box into an opportunity to benefit the school’s football team. So far, she’s made the most of it, fitting in with guys on the team, handling kick-off duties occasionally and balancing her full-time role on the soccer team.

However, she is not the first girl to don the pads for Davis Drive Middle. Unlike most coaches at any level, head football coach Phil Echols often invites them to try out and encourages as much interest in his program as he can. He hopes to have an opportunity to give Julia some attempts at field goals, but they just don’t come that often in middle school football. That might change, however, as she plans to attend some kicking camps next summer to improve her technique and power in the hope of making junior varsity at Panther Creek next fall.

Good luck Julia!
