Carolina Railhawks can win division
The Carolina Railhawks are poised for a franchise first: a regular season division win!

The Railhawks play in the North American Soccer League (NASL) and can move on to grab the second seed in the United States Soccer Federation’s (USSF) Division 2 playoff tournament if they win on Friday at home against the Austin Aztex.

Currently, the team is tied with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the standings but do hold the advantage in goals scored, 41-30. Vancouver also plays Friday in Portland against the Timbers. If both teams win, the Railhawks will have to match Vancouver’s margin of victory to clinch.

They are already assured of a spot, but where they end up seeded depends on how this weekend’s various conference contests shake out. The USSF playoffs are made up of teams from the NASL and the USL, the United Soccer League.

Confused? Don’t worry about it, most people are when it comes to minor league soccer and all the assorted federations and organizations. It’s not nearly as cut-and-dry as say, the NCAA Men’s and Women’s basketball tournaments. However, it’s not too tough to put it all together by spending a few minutes on the tournament-specific pages of each of the following Web sites:

www.carolinarailhawks.com – Carolina Railhawks
www.ussoccer.com – United States Soccer
www.nasl.com – North American Soccer League
www.usl.com – United Soccer League (homepage only)

Ultimately, like most things, what’s important is just showing up. Come out to support the Railhawks this Friday, the weather looks great, the beer will be cold and the fans are typically pretty rowdy. Even if the calls are going our way.
